The Florida Wildlife Corridor is a statewide network of public conservation lands and privately held acreage that together provide a conservation opportunity of nearly 18 million acres. These connected green spaces improve the health of our waters, ensure the long-term survival of many native species, provide life support systems for Florida’s cities, and sustain Florida’s rural economies and livelihoods.
While more than 10 million acres of the Corridor are already permanently protected, the remaining land – primarily working farms, ranches and forests – is at risk of being lost to development as Florida’s population grows by nearly 1,000 people per day. Some scenarios show that development could consume most of the unprotected land in the Corridor, at a rate as much as 10,000 acres per month, and sever the important connections between Florida’s legacy conservation lands.
One of the alternatives is investing in land conservation with willing sellers to keep the Corridor connected. This would secure a future for Florida agriculture and steer new development closer to existing urban cores. The vision of the Florida Wildlife Corridor provides an opportunity to attract the investment needed to keep these natural and rural landscapes connected by protecting the waters that sustain us, the working farms and ranches that feed us, the forests that clean our air, the coastal zones that protect us from storms and the habitat that these lands provide for Florida’s diverse wildlife
Volusia Forever was created in 2000 when the citizens of Volusia County voted to tax themselves over 20 years to protect the county’s natural biodiversity. Voters renewed it for another 20 years in the November 2020 election. To stretch these dollars as far as possible, Volusia Forever partners with federal, state, regional, and local agencies that are committed to protecting natural resources. Since the beginning of the program, approximately 38,000 acres have been acquired through the outright purchase of new public land and conservation easements that permanently limits uses of privately held acreage in order to protect its conservation values. This is a remarkable accomplishment, but there is more to do to protect the water quality, ecology and economy of Volusia County.
Conserving, maintaining and restoring the natural environment provides resources to ensure that sufficient quantities of water are available to meet current and future needs; meets the need for high-quality resource-based outdoor opportunities, greenways, trails, and open space; and preserves the habitat needed for our native wildlife. These benefits to land conservation protect our water, wildlife, and way of life.
